Arne Slot can do something no Liverpool coach has managed at Old Trafford

Arne Slot could achieve something that no other Liverpool coach has managed in the club’s history against Man United.

This is the 218th meeting of the two clubs and the 186th in league football, all bar four of those coming in the top flight.

Liverpool won 3-0 at Old Trafford in this fixture last season, as Luis Diaz scored twice in the first half before Mo Salah added a third in the 56th minute.

That was just the third match of Slot’s reign and, this year, he could become the first Liverpool manager in history to win both of his first two league games at Man United.

Not since January 2002 have Liverpool kept back-to-back league clean sheets at Old Trafford.

They could score three or more goals in consecutive league visits for the second time in their history, after netting four and five in the calendar year of 2021.

In last year’s 3-0 win, they set a new club record by scoring for an eighth successive league and cup visit. Nine of the last 19 league meetings, home and away, have resulted in a draw.

Liverpool have won 20 of the Premier League era meetings, with United winning 30 and 17 ending in a draw. Despite having lost 10 fewer games than United in those meetings, Liverpool have scored just five more goals.

The Reds have scored in all but two of the last 17 league visits. In the last 21 Old Trafford league visits, they have kept four clean sheets, and eight in the last 43 league trips to Man United.

Since losing 1-0 at home to Everton in November, Man United have scored in 22 consecutive Premier League games. It is their longest scoring run since Alex Ferguson retired when, between November 2012 and April 2013, his team scored in 23 consecutive matches.

In the 2024/25 season, Man United finished with 42 points to occupy 15th place, their lowest position since they were relegated from the top flight in 1973/74.

This time around, they are 22 points better off than at the same stage of the previous campaign. Last season, after 34 games they had 39 points.

They have lost only one of the last 11 league games at Old Trafford (the 2-1 defeat to Leeds last month). Since Christmas Day, they have lost two of their 17 league outings.

This will be the Red Devils’ 37th match of the campaign in all competitions, while it will be Liverpool’s 54th. They will play fewer games this season (40) than in any campaign since 1914-15 (39).

They have kept one clean sheet in their last seven league outings – in the 1-0 win at Chelsea last month. Only Burnley and Wolves have kept fewer league clean sheets this term than United’s six.
