‘Dedicate this to him’ – Porto captain pays title tribute to Diogo Jota

After Porto were officially crowned title winners, their captain, Diogo Costa, paid a touching tribute to former teammate Diogo Jota with a special shirt.

Costa and Jota were both on Porto’s books together in 2016/17, albeit the former was in the youth team, but it was during their shared international exploits that their friendship was struck.

The pair played 23 times together for Portugal, with their final outing together seeing them lift the Nations League trophy, less than a month before Jota’s tragic death.

And after Porto confirmed their 31st league title and the third of Costa’s career, the goalkeeper wore a shirt with an image of Jota on his sleeve and the number 19 on his back in tribute.

Jota donned the No. 19 during his season-long loan at Porto, while his brother Andre also represented the club, and in an interview after Costa kept a clean sheet to help deliver the title, he told SIC Noticias:

“Yes, [this is for] our Portista and beloved Diogo Jota, and his brother. For me, he was a national teammate, but also someone who played for FC Porto.

“I knew he was a huge Portista, and we really want to dedicate this championship to him, his brother and his family.”

Later, he offered a closer look at his special shirt on Sport TV, adding: “There’s so much to say, so much to remember.

“Our Jorge [Costa], our president, personally, Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva…there’s a mixture of sadness and happiness at the same time.

“Today, when I woke up, I felt…it’s almost as if I knew something good was going to happen, because we deserve it and I think we did everything for it.”

A classy touch in honour of Jota and his family.

Porto’s title celebrations proved emotional as various tributes were paid to Jota, long-serving president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa, and one of their greatest-ever captains Jorge Costa, all of whom passed in 2025.
