Rebecca Knaak's stoppage-time winner rescued Manchester City's hopes of the title and ensured that winning the Women's Super League remains in their hands.
Knaak scored a last-gasp header past Liverpool goalkeeper Jennifer Falk to snatch victory and move City 11 points clear of Arsenal having played three games more.
City spent much of the game on the back foot, but Liverpool were unable to capitalise on their chances and the closest they came to scoring was when Grace Fisk struck the post from a corner.
The hosts were far from at their free-flowing best, and lacked a clinical edge for much of the game. For long stages it looked as though City were going to slip up in the race for the title.
A poor first-half showing resulted in just one effort on target from City, with Khadija Shaw being denied from close range.
Liverpool were on top before the break as Fisk hit the woodwork, while Aurelie Csillag and Denise O'Sullivan also produced chances.
But City finally found their groove in the second half after weathering the storm, with Kerolin and Shaw among the players to have efforts denied by Falk.
Liverpool's opportunities in the second half were limited as City seized the momentum, but Beata Olsson and Ceri Holland still both managed to flash good efforts narrowly wide.
And the visitors were unable to cope with City's relentless late attacks and Knaak managed to squeeze her headed effort into the back of the net, albeit with a significant helping hand from Falk, who got down to the ball but was unable to hold it.
Should City beat West Ham on the final day of the season, they will win the division regardless of Arsenal's results.
