Sir Alex Ferguson left Old Trafford ahead of Manchester United's Premier League clash with Liverpool after reporting feeling unwell just over an hour before kick-off.

The 84-year-old was treated at the stadium by medics and taken to hospital by ambulance, but it is understood it isn't being treated as an emergency and was instead a precaution.

Ferguson is a regular at Old Trafford and was posing for photographs with supporters before he began to feel unwell and was treated at the scene before leaving the ground.

He is United's greatest ever manager, winning 13 Premier League titles and two Champions League crowns before retiring in 2013. He was at Anfield for United's win against Liverpool earlier this season, when he sat next to countryman and his great Merseyside rival Kenny Dalglish.

Ferguson had a health scare in 2018 when he suffered a brain haemorrhage and needed life-saving surgery, but there is nothing to suggest today's incident is related to that.
