Liverpool still have work to do to secure Champions League qualification after a controversial Premier League defeat at Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. A deflected Matheus Cunha effort and a Benjamin Sesko finish - allowed by VAR despite the player handling - put United in control first half and, although goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo drew the Reds level after the break, a late strike from Kobbie Mainoo ensured another defeat for the Reds.

The result means Arne Slot's side still need four points from their final three games to be mathematically certain of a top-five finish.

The ECHO was in attendance at Old Trafford and here we run the rule over the performance of the Liverpool players.

**Freddie Woodman 6**

Couldn't do much about the first and a bit unlucky with the second after save from Fernandes was handled by Sesko but still allowed. Didn't look entirely comfortable, though, and no chance with third.

**Curtis Jones 7**

Willing to put himself about at right-back and pushed forward when required. Another impressive shift in an unaccustomed position. Booked.

**Ibrahima Konate 6**

Not the most convincing with some of his defending when intervening more through luck than judgement and not strong enough for second goal. Like the rest of his team-mates, much better second half. Subbed.

**Virgil van Dijk 6**

Got his head to some important clearances and didn't stand on ceremony with some of his defending.

**Andy Robertson 5**

Tough time up against Mbeumo and another for whom defending was often last ditch. Set-piece deliveries lacked a bit of quality. Subbed.

**Ryan Gravenberch 6**

Disappeared for large swathes of first half and then reluctant to shoot until too late. Became much more involved as Liverpool dominated for much of it after interval.

**Alexis Mac Allister 5**

Bypassed far too often in midfield and slow to determine his passing routes. Improved with everyone else after break and strong pressing for Liverpool equaliser but poor clearance for United winner.

**Jeremie Frimpong 5**

Got the ball in good positions a couple of times first half but did nothing with it. More a threat after break, especially after Shaw booked. Subbed.

**Cody Gakpo 6**

Playing off the left, close with one effort first half and put himself about to gave United's defenders something to think about, and took his goal well. Booked.

**Dominik Szoboszlai 7**

As one of two false nines, probably guilty of trying too hard which led to diminishing returns first half but hugely improved after that with brilliant play for first goal and swift assist for second.

**Florian Wirtz 6**

Had one shot wide but took a knock on ankle when threatening to grow in influence and then went missing until a lot better second half. Could have done more, though, you suspect.

**Milos Kerkez (for Robertson 59) 6**

Good challenge denied breaking Mbeumo and put in decent cameo.

**Rio Ngumoha (for Frimpong 75) 6**

Should have closed down Shaw quicker for winner but caused real problems with his running and close with one effort.

**Federico Chiesa (for Konate 87)**

The substitution that hardly ever works didn't again.
