Kobbie Mainoo has hailed Manchester United boss Michael Carrick by claiming that he would 'die for him'. The former midfielder has had an excellent impact at Old Trafford since replacing Ruben Amorim.
United's brilliant run of form has seen the club secure a spot in the Champions League for next season - Sunday's win over bitter rivals Liverpool rubber-stamping that place.
Mainoo, 21, was key to that victory having scored the winning goal in a 3-2 success. And he was full of praise for Carrick at the full time whistle.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Mainoo said: "He's [Carrick] played a huge part. The confidence in not just me but all the players. You want to follow him and fight for him and die for him on the pitch. That's what we showed today."
United's turnaround under Carrick has coincided with Mainoo's return to the side. The academy graduate seemed sure to leave the club under Ruben Amorim but he has now committed his future to the club by signing a new deal with United until 2031.
On United's win, he said: "One hundred per cent [remarkable turnaround]. To turn it around the way we have done, it's a credit to the players and the manager as well. We are just looking forward and still need to finish the season strong. It's not enough for us. We want to just keep on winning and winning.
"It was difficult, of course, any time you're not playing football," Mainoo added about his own form. "I just tried to look forward as much as possible, keep working hard and keep my head down to get these things from it I guess.
"I've not been around the goals too much but happy to be around it in this game, such a special occasion and special fixture."
United and Mainoo will be aiming to continue their positive runs of form despite having already secured their spot in the Champions League. Carrick's side travel to Sunderland next weekend, with games against Nottingham Forest and Brighton to come before the end of the campaign.
United currently sit third and should they stay there, it would represent their best Premier League finish since 2022/23.
