Sunderland targeting financial boost ahead of Man Utd and Everton clashes

Sunderland can secure a major financial boost based on their final Premier League position.

Sunderland face a challenging trio of fixtures as they look to end a largely positive season on a high - and there is still plenty to play for over the coming three weeks.

The Black Cats are on the fringes of the battle for European places following Saturday’s draw at Wolverhampton Wanderers and will now turn their focus towards next weekend’s home game with Manchester United. That is followed by a final away day of the campaign at Everton before the season comes to a close with a Stadium of Light meeting with a Chelsea side also hoping to secure a spot in European football.

Whether Sunderland earn a spot in the Europa Conference League and Europa League remains to be seen - but the financial rewards of moving up the Premier League table over the next three weeks are clear to see. Each club will receive prize money worth approximately £2.6m for each place in the table and that could provide a major boost to the Black Cats coffers ahead of the summer transfer window.

But how much money could Sunderland land over the coming weeks?

As well as their merit payments based on their final position, each Premier League club also receives equal share payments based on domestic and international broadcasting agreements. Based on last season, all 20 clubs received £29.8million from the domestic broadcasting deal and a further £59.2million from the international agreement.

In a statement released on their official website, the Premier League said: “The collective marketing of Premier League rights and the League's revenue distribution formula assist Clubs in their efforts to develop and acquire talented players, as well as build and improve stadiums for fans. In its payments to Clubs, the Premier League is the most equitable of Europe's major leagues and makes a significant annual funding contribution to the domestic football pyramid, community programmes and wider good causes. In Season 2024/25, the Premier League committed more than £550m to the wider game.”
