On This Day in Football: 4th May

Cardiff City concluded their 1928/29 First Division campaign with a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers. Despite boasting the best defensive record in the division, Cardiff finished at the bottom of the table and were relegated to the Second Division. Their season was marked by a stark contrast between defence and attack, as they also recorded the worst goalscoring tally in the league. Notably, Cardiff had started their home campaign with a resounding 7-0 victory over Burnley.

Exeter City hosted Aldershot in their final Division 3 (South) match of the 1934/35 season at St James Park. After a goalless first half, Exeter exploded into action in the second half, securing an emphatic 8-1 victory. This remarkable turnaround highlighted the unpredictable nature of football, with Exeter showcasing their attacking prowess in the latter 45 minutes.

On the same day, Allan Duckworth made a memorable debut for Accrington Stanley in their Division 3 (North) match against Barrow. Duckworth, who had been a prolific scorer for the reserve side, found the net just four minutes into his first team debut. His goal contributed to a crucial victory that helped Accrington avoid the re-election zone. However, Duckworth’s promising career was cut short as he was carried off with a knee injury after just 20 minutes. Despite attempts to recover, he retired from football four months later, having also suffered a dislocated shoulder. Those 20 minutes remained his only appearance in League football.

The world of Italian football was plunged into mourning following the Superga tragedy. An aeroplane carrying AC Torino back from a friendly match against Benfica in Lisbon crashed into the Basilica of Superga near Turin, claiming the lives of all 31 people on board. Among the deceased were 18 Torino players, who formed the backbone of the Italian national team, and their English manager, Leslie Lievesley. With only one senior player, Sauro Tomà, left in the squad due to injury, Torino fielded their youth team for the remaining four league matches. In a gesture of solidarity, their opponents also fielded youth sides, and Torino won all four matches, securing their fifth consecutive Italian championship.

Peter Shilton made his Football League debut for Leicester City against Everton at Filbert Street. The young goalkeeper kept a clean sheet in a 3-0 victory in the First Division. Shilton’s debut marked the beginning of an illustrious career, during which he played 1005 League matches and earned 125 caps for England, setting records in both categories.

The First Division fixture between Wolverhampton Wanderers and Liverpool provided a dramatic conclusion to the League season. Wolves needed a victory to have any chance of avoiding relegation, while Liverpool required a win to secure the League title, being one point behind leaders QPR. In front of a 48,900-strong crowd at Molineux, Wolves led 1-0 with 15 minutes remaining. However, Liverpool staged a comeback to win 3-1, clinching the championship and consigning Wolves to relegation.
