Liverpool set to make contact with "very valuable" Premier League player over move - journalist

Liverpool are planning to make contact with Bournemouth centre-back Marcos Senesi over a summer move to Anfield, according to journalist Matteo Moretto.

The Reds lost 3-2 away to rivals Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday, with yet another poor performance on show by Arne Slot’s side.

Defensively, Liverpool have been lacklustre throughout the season, with Ibrahima Konate so disappointing and even Virgil van Dijk not at his perfect best at times.

Jeremy Jacquet will add to the centre-back depth when he arrives from Rennes this summer, while Giovanni Leoni is also working his way back from injury.

Despite this, another central defender feels like a must, given Konate’s contract situation and Van Dijk’s age, and that’s where Senesi comes into play.

According to an update from Moretto on X, contact is set to arrive from Liverpool for the Bournemouth ace soon, following plenty of interest in him:

“Recently, Liverpool has shown a lot of interest in Marcos Senesi. He could be the unexpected solution for the defender, whose contract with Bournemouth is about to expire. Soon there will be new contacts.”

Can Marcos Senesi make the step up to Liverpool?

There are plenty of reasons why Senesi looks like a strong centre-back option for Liverpool, not least because he has shone so much at the heart of Bournemouth’s defence this season.

The Argentine has averaged seven clearances and 2.6 aerial duel wins per game in the Premier League in 2025/26, while Cherries manager Andoni Iroala has heaped praise on him, saying:

“I remember some games that I watched from the previous season where he performed really well. And with us, you know what to expect when you put Marcos in the starting lineup. On the ball, off the ball, he understands very well also the way we want to play and for us it’s very valuable.”

Admittedly, Senesi is now 28, so he wouldn’t necessarily be a long-term signing, but considering Jacquet and Leoni are both young, some more experience wouldn’t be a bad thing.

He is Premier League proven, which is a bonus, as is being available on a free transfer, and he would add quality in and out of possession for Liverpool, which they desperately need.
