Dominik Szoboszlai appeared to respond to the taunts of Manchester United fans on Sunday at Old Trafford by reminding them of Liverpool’s status as reigning champions.
The Reds suffered an 11th Premier League loss of the campaign as it was beaten 3-2 by Michael Carrick’s side in another bruising experience. Having conceded two soft goals in the opening 14 minutes, Liverpool got back on level terms via Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, with the former assisting the latter for the second goal.
But that effort was undone when Kobbie Mainoo found a winning goal late on for United, as he placed the ball beyond Freddie Woodman from the edge of the area.

It was a frustrating result and performance from Liverpool at the home of their fiercest rivals.
The United fans certainly enjoyed the occasion and jeered the opposition players as they made their way off the pitch. Szoboszlai responded in kind by pointing at the gold Premier League winners’ badge on his sleeve, in a clip widely circulated on social media.
It’s not the first interaction Szoboszlai has shared with fans in recent weeks. He was seen remonstrating with his own supporters during last month’s FA Cup defeat at Manchester City, actions he later apologized for.

The Hungarian was certainly among Liverpool’s better performers in a poor team showing on Sunday. His energy and enthusiasm to regain possession were key to Liverpool’s short-lived fightback.
Szoboszlai has often set the standard this season, while others around him have underwhelmed.
“I try to do my best,” he told Sky Sports after the game. “I try to, as you say, drag them with me, take them with me and hopefully set an example day by day, game by game.
“That’s what I want to do and that’s going to be my plan for the last three games as well.”

With Virgil van Dijk ’s tenure as captain likely to end in a little over 12 months' time, Szoboszlai has been mentioned as a potential successor to the defender.
“He has a lot of attributes already, especially when it comes to leading by example,” Arne Slot said earlier this season, when asked about Szoboszlai’s leadership qualities.
“There is still a step to make in terms of leadership, being vocal and a voice in the dressing room if I compare him to Virgil, which is completely normal.

“But for all the other things, he has a lot to become a very influential player for Liverpool and you could call that a leader.”
Sunday’s game marked Szoboszlai’s 50th appearance of the season. He has now registered 13 goals and 10 assists and appears a shoo-in for the club’s player-of-the-season award.
