Liverpool’s 3-2 loss to Manchester United leaves Arne Slot under pressure as head coach.
The Reds fell to a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Manchester United, which was the defending champions’ 11th loss of the Premier League season. Liverpool fell two goals behind inside 14 minutes and while they drew level after half-time through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo, United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo’s 77th-minute strike ensured that the visitors returned to Anfield empty-handed.
Given Liverpool’s lacklustre season, losing 18 times in all competitions, Slot’s future as head coach has come under the microscope. Sections of supporters are calling for a change in the dugout, especially given that former Reds midfielder Xabi Alonso is currently available.
And Nicol reckons that Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group would part ways with Slot if they were given the green light by Alonso. Speaking on ESPN, former Reds full-back Nicol said: “They look absolutely lost. There is not a thing you can put your finger on and say that is a positive other than Szoboszlai.
“I think if Xabi Alonso agreed to go to Liverpool, they would let him go because they are in disarray. As bad as it has been for Arne Slot, somehow it is getting worse and worse when they step on the field. It's hard not to ridicule them now, that's how bad it is.
“You can see with the performances that they are lost. You know Slot is tyring to help everyone and talk to them but it looks like they have completely lost faith in him.
“They are in a position where there is a huge cloud over them and the only way you get rid of it is by making huge changes. It's not by keeping the same guy in charge with the same players. You have to put a hand grenade in, blow it up and start again. I don't believe you can do it with Arne Slot now. It was the nail in the coffin when I'm watching this team, it looks completely lost.”
