Liverpool will qualify for the Champions League this season but Arne Slot's side has now lost 18 games in all competitions, going down 3-2 at Old Trafford against Manchester United this weekend.

Kobbie Mainoo's winner came after the Reds had come back from two goals down, but that was as much down to Amad Diallo and Senne Lammens as anything that Liverpool mustered creatively. Missing Alexander Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Mohamed Salah through injury, Slot's attack was blunted.

Come the summer, Salah and Andy Robertson will move on, but there might be other exits too. There are question marks over several stars and another injection of quality will be required.

But who should come in? How many additions would be the right balance? Last summer, there is an argument that too much was changed in a short period.

"Liverpool fans have been desperate for Liverpool to spend real big money — maybe like we've seen Man City or Chelsea in the past — in one summer," Jamie Carragher said on Sky Sports.

"Everyone was excited in the summer, but it didn't feel Liverpool-like to me, or certainly over the last 10 years, and how they got to the top under Jurgen Klopp.

"It felt almost Real Madrid — go and buy the best players for loads of money.

"I want Liverpool to go back to buying the right players for the right money and what they need right now. They won't be able to do what they did last summer, they don't have that type of revenue.

"They don't need to bring six or seven players in, because it's more change, but there's three players that need to go right into the team for me.

"Replace Mo Salah with a right winger, a right-back and a central midfielder then the players you bought last summer, like Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, become better players."

Liverpool.com says: There is no doubt that with better players around him, someone like Wirtz will showcase his class more often. Next season, you would like to think that a different version of Isak will be available.

But while replacing Salah with a pacy wide forward who can score and create is a must, ensuring that there is sufficient depth in attack, further additions are trickier to pinpoint.

More legs in midfield would help, but perhaps Alexis Mac Allister can turn things around. At right-back, Conor Bradley will be fit again and there is Jeremie Frimpong.

More quality is required to come in, but identifying specific areas — beyond a Salah successor — is harder than it looks.
