‘Sell him for £80m’ - Liverpool supporters turn on Alexander Isak as Newcastle United laugh last

Alexander Isak has suffered another injury niggle and missed Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat to Manchester United.

Liverpool supporters were left seething as Alexander Isak missed their 3-2 defeat to bitter rivals Manchester United.

Whispers circulated before kick-off that the Swede had picked up a groin injury. This was confirmed when the teams were announced, with Isak failing to make the matchday squad.

Arne Slot was conscious to play down the severity of Isak’s latest setback. He told reporters: "So, it is the situation so accept it. Of course, very unlucky and unhappy with the fact Alex picked up a small - really small - injury.

“That's why this game came a bit too early. It wasn't much but unfortunately it was too much for him to be able to play.”

Alexander Isak injury woes

Isak suffered five muscle injuries during his three-year spell at St James’ Park. Newcastle United fans tried to warn Liverpool when the transfer saga reached a deadlock last summer.

Since joining the Reds, Isak struggled for fitness until suffering a broken leg in December. He scored his first goal since returning a week ago before picking up another groin problem.

Liverpool supporters turn on Alexander Isak?

Social media was rife with criticism from Liverpool fans once news broke of Isak’s absence. One supporter wrote: “Isak is an absolute failure of a signing, three goals in 16 games before injury and then just never fit again.”

Another prominent user suggested cashing in - and taking a £45million hit - could be a plausible option. He posted: “I'd sell Isak this summer for £80million and reinvest in a reliable, fit player.

“We can't rely on his fitness next season. The idea of him replacing Salah's goals is ridiculous. Salah missed 16 games in 9 years. Isak has already missed double that this season alone.

“It'd take real courage for Hughes and Edwards to admit the mistake and cash in, so it's unlikely to happen. People can get annoyed with me all they want but the reality is Isak has not been available for approximately 50 per cent of Premier League games over the last 4 seasons. And to be honest, how much of that time has he been fully fit?”
