Five grim stats as Liverpool’s season hits new low: Worst set-piece record and no top-10 away wins

Liverpool's challenging campaign reached a new nadir this weekend after losing 3-2 at Manchester United.Arne Slot's side fell two goals behind inside the opening quarter of an hour, and despite rallying to level after half-time, Kobbie Mainoo's campaign condemned the Reds to another disappointing defeat. The pressure is on Slot, whose side have been a pale imitation of last season's Premier League winners."I'm not here to make excuses," Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk reflected at full-time."It's been a very disappointing season, an unacceptable season, and it's tough. We shouldn't feel sorry for ourselves whatsoever."We have to work and turn this around and make sure that next season these things don't happen. It's not Liverpool. I think it's unacceptable that we have lost too many times as defending champions of the Premier League and we shouldn't accept it."There will be a lot of work that has to be done going into next season. When I am back from the World Cup I will go into it, but there is a lot of work to be done behind the scenes."Following the club's latest loss, we've looked at some stats that make for grim reading.Liverpool have lost 11 games in the Premier League this season. It's the most defeats suffered by a reigning Premier League champion since Leicester City in 2016/17 (18). Only five Premier League champions have lost more games during a title defence.Liverpool's 18 defeats in all competitions is their most since losing 18 games under Brendan Rodgers in 2014/15. Only three times since the Merseysiders were promoted to the top flight in 1962 have the club lost more games in a single campaign. Liverpool have taken just two points from eight away games against teams in the top half of the Premier League this season. Slot's side have not won a single away game against a team in the top 10.Defeat at Manchester United saw the Red Devils complete a league double over Liverpool for the first time in a decade (2015/16). This season is also the first time that Liverpool have lost home and away to both Manchester clubs in the same season in 113 years.Liverpool have conceded 17 goals from set-piece situations in the Premier League this season, excluding penalties. It's the highest number of set-piece goals conceded by the Reds in the Premier League era, overtaking the 16 conceded in 1992/93, then a 42-game campaign. No side in the Premier League has conceded more in 2025/26.
