According to reliable reporting in the Netherlands, Ajax have held talks with Arne Slot about becoming their new head coach.

The Amsterdam outfit are on the hunt for a new manager, with it being asserted that club chief Jordi Cruijff is hard at work trying to appoint a long‑term head coach for Ajax.

While the Amsterdam club has been most heavily linked with a series of Spanish tacticians, including Míchel of Girona, the technical director made the bold decision to approach Arne Slot.

De Telegraaf’s Mike Verweij said on the Telegraaf Kick Off Podcast that although talks were held, the Reds boss is not looking to make the move right now:

“I was told again that they have also inquired with Arne Slot,” said Verweij as quoted by SoccerNewsNL.

“Slot is still very firmly in the saddle, he just continues at Liverpool. I also understood that Arne Slot is not very keen to go to Ajax at this point in his career.”

It seems that Ajax are getting a touch desperate to appoint a permanent long-term manager. The club ast lifted the Eredivisie title back in 2022 — their 36th championship — and the years since have been nothing short of chaotic.

When Erik ten Hag departed for Manchester United that summer, Ajax entered a period of near-constant upheaval, cycling through five different managers in just three seasons.

Francesco Farioli, who has just won the league with Porto, and John Heitinga – having served as Arne Slot’s assistant during their Premier League title-winning campaign – were brought in this 2025/26 season but were both dismissed months into their tenure.

Heitinga won just five of his 11 Eredivisie matches and was dismissed in November 2025 following a humiliating 3-0 home defeat to Galatasaray in the Champions League. They have been with interim boss Fred Grimm ever since.

Meanwhile for Liverpool, it does not change much. Slot is widely expected to remain in charge for next season, and interest from Ajax will do nothing to change FSG’s internal thinking.

So for now, we can categorise this link as unlikely to develop in anything further than rumours.
