Liverpool lost 3-2 to Manchester United in the Premier League at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon. The hosts took control in the first half, with goals from Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Šeško giving them a two-goal lead at the break.

Liverpool responded after the interval, scoring twice in nine minutes through Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo to restore parity.

However, Kobbie Mainoo struck the decisive goal in the 77th minute to secure victory for United. The result confirmed United’s return to Europe’s elite club competition after a two-year absence, while Liverpool still need four points to secure their own qualification.

Michael Carrick has now overseen wins against Liverpool, Manchester City, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea, completing a clean sweep of England’s “Super League” clubs.

According to The Guardian, Michael Carrick is expected to be offered the chance to continue as Manchester United head coach after securing Champions League qualification.

Carrick has not yet held talks over making his interim role permanent, as club executives were waiting to see whether he could guide United into Europe’s top competition. He has recorded 10 wins and two draws from 14 league matches since taking charge.

It is believed that the job would be his to turn down. Football director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada have been impressed with Carrick’s impact since he replaced Ruben Amorim in January and are aware he has strong backing within the squad.

Michael Carrick remained coy about landing the job on a full-time basis when speaking to former Manchester United teammate Dimitar Berbatov after the win over Arne Slot’s side.

He told Premier League productions: “I said it when I came in that I think part of the responsibility here was to plan for the long-term and not make decisions just to get by week by week or until the end of the season, and certainly done that.

“There’s obviously conversations that keep going on about what it looks like in the future, and I’m kind of part of that so things will get sorted out in good time. “I think we’re in a good place at the moment, so let’s see how it develops over the next few weeks.”

Carrick will be aiming to guide United to a fourth consecutive league win when they travel to Sunderland on Saturday.

Victory, combined with Liverpool and Aston Villa failing to beat Chelsea and Burnley respectively, would secure third place for United.
