Anthony Gordon scored against Barcelona in the first of their three games against Newcastle United this season.
Barcelona are reportedly keen to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer.
Speculation continues to surround the winger as the transfer window approaches. Recent weeks have seen Gordon linked with a potential move to Bayern Munich.
Max Eberl, the sporting director at the German giants, refused to rule out a potential move when facing the media last week. Gordon has not played for Newcastle since the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace - three games ago - due to a hip injury.
Newcastle United stance
It is understood that the Magpies will not stand in any player’s way who wishes to leave the club. Toon chiefs are keen to avoid another Alexander Isak saga that derailed last year’s transfer business.
Gordon is effectively contracted until 2031 as Newcastle have the option of extending by an extra season. He is valued at around £75million - a hefty fee for potential European suitors.
Newcastle will not let their stars leave cheaply, with Gordon’s valuation coming at a premium given his nationality and versatility. As it stands, the player has not directly signalled to the St James’ Park hierarchy that he wants to leave.
Barcelona interest
Spanish outlet RAC1 claim Barcelona are keeping tabs on Gordon’s situation. He scored against the Catalans in September’s fixture - the first of three games between the two clubs this season.
Barca’s financial picture - while not out of the woods - is vastly superior to the club’s turmoil in 2021. But Newcastle’s price tag would still be a significant outlay for the La Liga champions.
If Gordon joined Barcelona, that likely rules out any attempt to sign Marcus Rashford permanently. The Manchester United forward earns approximately £325,000 per week and has 24 goal contributions across all competitions despite his role as a bit-part player.
Eddie Howe on Anthony Gordon links
Eddie Howe downplayed the Gordon links as part and parcel of Premier League management earlier this month. He said: “I think that comes with the territory,” Howe said. “I think your best players will be the ones who are linked with high-profile moves.”
“The one thing I’m not going to do is play a player if they are not 100 per cent committed to the club and its future. That commitment and resolve, what the player gives to the team, has to be total.
“I’m not talking about Anthony here, I’m talking generally across the board. I have to do what is right for the team and I will continue to do that.”
