This performance brought his total League goals for the 1927/28 season to an unprecedented 60, a record that still stands today. Including his goals in the FA Cup and representative matches, Dean’s total for the season was an astounding 82 goals.

The Third Division (North) of the Football League witnessed a goal-laden season in 1933/34, with four teams scoring over 100 League goals and another four conceding over 100. On the final day of the season, Barrow came close to setting a new record by defeating Gateshead 12-1 at Holker Street. Jimmy Shankly, one of the famous Shankly brothers, scored five of those goals. Barrow ended the season with a club record of 116 League goals, although they also conceded 94, resulting in an average of exactly five goals per match.

The 1956 FA Cup final between Manchester City and Birmingham City is remembered for one of the most famous footballing injuries. Manchester City’s goalkeeper, Bert Trautmann, was injured during the match but continued to play, helping his team secure a 3-1 victory. It was later discovered that Trautmann had broken his neck during the game. Despite the severity of the injury, Trautmann downplayed his actions, stating that had he known the extent of the injury, he would have left the field immediately.
Arsenal’s Highbury stadium recorded its lowest-ever League attendance on this day, with only 4,554 spectators witnessing a 3-0 defeat to Leeds United.

A tragic incident occurred at York City’s Bootham Crescent during their Fourth Division match against Halifax Town. Referee Roy Harper collapsed on the pitch shortly after kick-off and died of a heart attack. Despite the tragedy, the match continued with one of the other officials taking over refereeing duties.

The FA Cup Final at Wembley saw a significant upset as Second Division Sunderland defeated the reigning champions, Leeds United, 1-0. Ian Porterfield scored the decisive goal in the first half, while Sunderland goalkeeper Jim Montgomery made a memorable double-save in the second half to deny Trevor Cherry and Peter Lorimer. Sunderland manager Bob Stokoe’s jubilant celebration on the pitch has been immortalised in a statue outside Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.
