Liverpool welcome Chelsea to Anfield in the Premier League on Saturday.
Interim boss Callum McFarlane insists that Chelsea’s players have the mentality to bounce back as they turn their attention to Liverpool.
The London side’s season hit its latest low as they were beaten 3-1 by Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have been in freefall, losing their past six Premier League games and can no longer qualify for the Champions League with three fixtures remaining.
McFarlane is holding the reins until the end of the season after Chelsea sacked head coach Liam Rosenior. Despite beating Leeds United to reach the FA Cup final, the Blues were dreadful against a Forest side that made wholesale changes ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg.
Chelsea travel to Liverpool on Saturday. A win for the Reds will book their spot in next campaign’s Champions League. For Chelsea, only a Europa League or Europa Conference League spot is up for grabs but McFarlane says the squad will be driven.
McFarlane said via Football London: “I know the group, I've known them for a little while now and they are driven, they want what's best for themselves, they want what's best for this club and we're going to do everything we can to try and win every single game we can from now to the end of the season.”
Chelsea were without Pedro Neto and Alejandro Garnacho against Forest because of issues they sustained in training. They also lost goalkeeper Robert Sanchez Jesse Derry, who was handed his Premier League debut, after both suffered sickening head blows. Sanchez and Derry will have to follow concussion protocol and may miss out against Liverpool.
“I think there are more important things than that right now,” said McFarlane when asked about Derry’s performance. “We're hearing positive signs from Jesse and Rob and I hope the Nottingham Forest players are okay as well. But yeah, I'm pleased for Jesse's performance. I thought he performed well while he was on the pitch, but there's probably more important things to think about right now.”
