Liverpool FC legend gets suited up for Chester races in viral video for Wirral store

John Barnes appeared in the hilarious social media clip on Saturday (May 2) promoting Heswall-based store Masuit in preparation for the Ladbrokes Chester Cup on Friday.

The Jamaican-born former England international and Liverpool star - who scored 198 career goals in more than 750 appearances - lives in Heswall and teamed up with local business Masuit for a tongue-in-cheek promotion.

In the clip, the 62-year-old former Tranmere manager turns up at the shop wearing casual clothes and store assistant helps him assemble an outfit.

The ex-footballer is all smiles as he tries on a black shirt, black tie and black leather shoes, followed by a white waistcoat and jacket.

In a separate clip, Barnes jokes about what state he could end up in at the racing festival.

He said: "Right, I just want to thank Masuit for looking after me on the way to Chester.

"However, depending on what state I end up in - if I'm okay, thank you very much Masuit.

"If not, I got it from Primark."

Masuit was established in Heswall last year by a pair of chauffeurs who “fell in love with Wirral” and decided to open a menswear shop with focus on affordable luxury.

Friends and colleagues, Gary McGuff from Edinburgh and David Lyttle from Belfast, said they “always knew” they wanted to open a suit shop but it wasn't until they visited Wirral that their vision came to life.

The Boodles May Festival starts tomorrow (May 6) and concludes on Friday with the Ladbrokes Chester Cup.

Chester Racecourse, also known as the Roodee, is recognised by the Guinness World Records the oldest racecourse on the planet.

The Ladbrokes Chester Cup, inaugurated in 1824, passed its 200th anniversary in 2024.
