Liverpool saw a significant boost in their bid to secure Champions League football on Monday as Chelsea were mathematically eliminated from the race for a top-five finish. Chelsea's 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest ended the Blues' hopes of qualifying for Europe's premier club competition, deepening the crisis that continues to engulf Stamford Bridge.

In a match that saw players from both sides sustain head injuries, a brace from Taiwo Awoniyi and a goal from Igor Jesus put Forest 3-0 ahead before Joao Pedro's stunning bicycle-kick consolation in stoppage time.

The defeat leaves Chelsea 10 points adrift of the top five following a run of six consecutive Premier League losses.

With only three matches remaining this season, the highest position Chelsea can achieve is sixth.

Given the club's dreadful recent form, even a sixth-place finish appears highly unlikely, particularly with the three sides currently above them in the table all showing considerable consistency.

Those three clubs - Bournemouth, Brentford, and Brighton - are the only remaining teams with any mathematical chance of displacing sides currently occupying the top five.

Arsenal and Manchester City wrapped up their qualification several weeks ago, with Manchester United joining them following their victory over Liverpool on Sunday.

The Reds and Aston Villa occupy fourth and fifth positions respectively on 58 points, meaning both clubs remain within reach of Bournemouth, Brentford and Brighton.

However, it appears extremely improbable that either Liverpool or Villa will drop out of the top five, given the substantial gap between themselves and those pursuing them.

Bournemouth have accumulated 52 points, Brentford are on 51, while Brighton have 50.

Victories for Liverpool and Villa this weekend would place both sides beyond the grasp of Brentford and Brighton, while Bournemouth would need to win to maintain their faint hopes.

Liverpool welcome Chelsea on Saturday, before travelling to Villa Park in their penultimate fixture of the season. That's followed one last home encounter against Brentford to conclude the campaign.

Arne Slot's side can secure their place in next season's Champions League by claiming four points from those remaining three matches, regardless of results elsewhere.
