Everton had to settle for a point as Manchester City scored a late equaliser which has given league leaders Arsenal full control in the title race.
In the first-half it was one way traffic as Everton were defending deep and were resolute. The Blues best moment came following a fast move where Merlin Rohl got in behind Manchester City's back-line and played the ball across which was intercepted by Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Minutes before half-time Pep Guardiola's side got their goal following a curling strike from Jeremy Doku.
Throughout the first-half the Citizens looked dangerous with Antoine Semenyo troubling the Blues and Rayan Cherki blazed over from close range.
In the second-half Everton responded and came close with Iliman Ndiaye as the introduction of Thierno Barry changed the game, and caused problems throughout.
Instantly Barry competed for an aerial duel and it led to Ndiaye being in on goal but fired straight at Donnarumma.
In the space of 13 minutes Everton changed the game following a brace from Barry and a powerful header from Jake O'Brien.
However Manchester City responded immediately scoring straight from kick-off as Mateo Kovacic cut through the spine of Everton to find Erling Haaland, who expertly finished past Jordan Pickford.
With the last kick of the game Doku got his second of the game as he curled his effort past Pickford, to deny the Blues three crucial points.
Everton shown their fragilities again
The past three weeks Everton have conceded in injury-time on all three occasions. The first was a 100th-minute winner from Virgil Van Dijk as Liverpool won the first ever Merseyside derby at Hill Dickinson.
Last weekend the Blues collapsed against West Ham just minutes after Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall levelled the scoring before Callum Wilson secured the points late on.
Against Manchester City, Everton lost their composure after Haaland scored but were denied a penalty as Bernardo Silva grabbed Merlin Rohl to the ground.
The past three weeks have seen Everton drop four points which would have put them on 52 points, joint-sixth with Bournemouth.
With the chances of finishing in a European place looking slim, how detrimental have these past three games been for Everton?
Strong display from Merlin Rohl
Rohl's last start came in the 1-0 victory over Aston Villa in January and since then the German Under 21s international has struggled to get a look in.
However against City, the midfielder came back into the side and was occupied on the right with his role to stop Nico O'Reilly when Manchester City attacked down Everton's right.
As the night went on Rohl grew into the game and displayed his pace as he managed to get in behind on a couple of occasions.
The midfielder often looked to play forward and played in substitute Barry, which led to Everton's leveller as the Frenchman reacted quickest to Marc Guehi's back pass, and slid his finish under Donnarumma.
Rohl assisted Barry for Everton's third as the game was stretched and his shot fell to the path of Barry who tapped in.
Could Tim Iroegbunam stay in the side?
The 22-year-old won Sky Sport's Player of the Match award and showed how strong defensively the midfielder is and could be a long-term replacement for Idrissa Gana Gueye, who is out of contract in the summer.
Iroegbunam made 11 defensive contributions which included six tackles and two recoveries. The midfielder often distributed play and had the athleticism to drive Everton forward.
The former Aston Villa man won 67% of his ground duels and one of his best traits is sliding in and winning the ball for Everton.
Iroegbunam has only started 14 times this season but has shown against Manchester City, and in the 2-0 defeat to Arsenal his defensive maturity and adds pace to an Everton midfield.
Hill Dickinson starting to feel like home
Despite the feeling of two points dropped, Hill Dickinson has started to feel like home and following the 3-3 draw with Manchester City, there was a resemblance of Goodison especially under the lights.
So far the stadium has taken a while for Evertonians to get accustomed to and with the Blues playing seven games midweek that hasn't helped to get used to the home comfort.
However with recent bus welcomes for the visit of Chelsea and Liverpool that has led to an improvement in atmosphere but also creating an intimidating place for teams to visit.
There has been potential with the stadium with the opening win over Brighton, a late winner against Crystal Palace and a 3-0 thumping over Chelsea, the new stadium has had its moments in its first season down on the waterfront.
