Peter Crouch backs Liverpool to sign Lewandowski
Liverpool are heading into one of their most chaotic summers in years, and Peter Crouch thinks the club should fix things by bringing in Robert Lewandowski from Barcelona. Speaking to Paddy Power, the former England and Liverpool striker called the move “sensible.”
He described Lewandowski as a “world-class player” and “a fantastic option,” even though he’s getting up there in age. Crouch admitted that Liverpool finished way behind the Premier League title race this season and need serious help, especially since last summer’s big spending didn’t really pay off.
Mohamed Salah’s leaving at the end of the season leaves a massive gap in Arne Slot’s squad. To make matters worse, Hugo Ekitike tore his Achilles tendon during the Champions League quarter-final against PSG. He’s expected to be out for about nine months, which rules him out for the rest of this year and a big chunk of the 2026-27 season. Alexander Isak, who cost the club a record fee from Newcastle, has also struggled with injuries and form during his first year at Anfield.
Meanwhile, Lewandowski’s status at Barcelona is looking shaky. A final decision on his future is coming soon, and it’s definitely not a sure thing that he’ll stay for the 2026-27 season. The Polish striker has bagged 118 goals in 188 games since moving from Bayern Munich, but Hansi Flick wouldn’t publicly commit to having him in his plans for next year. Lewandowski hits 38 in August; while he’s still clinical in front of goal, there are real worries about whether his body can handle the pace and physicality of a long season in England.
“That would be a sensible transfer,” Crouch told Paddy Power, adding of the experienced Polish player: “He’s a world-class player. He might not be getting any younger, but he’d be a fantastic option.”
Crouch explained: “Isak is just coming back and I think he’ll have a good season next year. But who would say no to signing Lewandowski? He still knows exactly how to score goals. There’s no doubt about that.” Liverpool were “miles away” from the Premier League title race this season and therefore need to strengthen their squad.
Yet the club cannot afford to splash out on transfers again, as Crouch notes, “What they spent last year hasn’t really paid off.”
Three Things that went unnoticed in Manchester United vs Liverpool
Would Lewandowski actually solve Liverpool’s problems for 2026-27?
Honestly, probably not the way Crouch thinks. Liverpool need a striker who can lead the line through a brutal campaign. In reality, the Reds are likely looking for a more affordable backup or a versatile forward who can play across the front line.

Bringing in Lewandowski as a temporary fix might feel good emotionally, but Liverpool’s real problem is building a team that can actually fight for the title again. A 38-year-old, no matter how many trophies he’s won, doesn’t close that gap. Signing him would just push back the total rebuild that Arne Slot needs to start this summer.
