What Xavi’s camp are saying as Chelsea make manager approach

Xavi Hernandez has given the green light for a move to England, but it doesn’t seem as if he will end up becoming the new Chelsea manager.

During his time at Barcelona, Xavi successfully guided the club to a La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup, building on a strong track record of seven trophies previously won at Al Sadd.

Despite his pedigree, it appears as if Chelsea‘s hierarchy is prioritising candidates with a proven ability to compete in the English top flight. The board’s current shortlist is focused on Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva, and Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola.

Following the unsuccessful and inexperienced appointment of Liam Rosenior, it makes sense to aim for established names, but it remains to be seen as to who Chelsea can attract.

Xavi’s camp claim Chelsea have made an approach

Ben Jacobs, speaking on his X account, has shared an update on Xavi’s situation, as well as the current state of Chelsea’s managerial search.

Xavi Hernandez’s side insists Chelsea have made a formal approach and is open to a move to England. However, my understanding is Chelsea are not expected to proceed.

Xabi Alonso, Marco Silva and Andoni Iraola all under serious consideration and Xavi, for now, has been ruled out by Chelsea.

It just makes sense.

Xavi is a slight risk for Chelsea

Appointing Xavi Hernandez would represent a massive gamble for Chelsea.

While his pedigree as a legend and trophy-winner is undeniable, his lack of experience in the Premier League is a major concern.

The English top flight is faster and more physically demanding than La Liga, and Xavi’s possession-heavy, technical style struggled at times against more robust teams.

Furthermore, his recent, often contentious departure from Barcelona highlighted how he can be affected by high-pressure environments.
