Darwin Nunez has ‘agreement’ to leave Saudi club 1 year after Liverpool exit

Darwin Nunez has not played competitively since February 16, and now reportedly has “an agreement” with Al-Hilal to leave in the summer.

Liverpool’s former No. 9 was deregistered from Al-Hilal’s list of foreign players for the Saudi Pro League in February, leaving him eligible for only the AFC Champions League.

Darwin Nunez: Liverpool to Al-Hilal Transfer Details

Transfer Fee £46 million

Add-Ons £10.4 million

Contract Expiry 2028

Clubs Linked Juventus, Chelsea, AC Milan

Transfer Note: Liverpool stand to lose out on the majority of the agreed £10.4m in add-ons with Nunez failing to meet performance targets at Al-Hilal.

But the Saudi side were eliminated in the last 16, meaning Nunez has only been able to train with Al-Hilal in the weeks since, and play a small role for Uruguay during the international break.

According to Uruguayan outlet El Observador, Nunez has now “reached an agreement to leave ahead of the upcoming season,” just one year after his Liverpool exit.

Nunez is said to have met with the club’s owners in recent days, with an agreement for the striker to “leave permanently” after they, and manager Simone Inzaghi, cast him aside following the arrival of Karim Benzema.

He played 24 times across all competitions, scoring nine times and assisting a further five goals before his opportunity to play ended in mid-February, as he was also left out of the last 16 tie.

Juventus, AC Milan and even Chelsea have been namechecked as possible destinations, while a move to Turkey was previously mooted, with a return to Europe the likely eventuality for the 26-year-old.

The Uruguayan only joined Al-Hilal from Liverpool in August, in a deal worth an initial £46 million, and his early departure will mean the Reds will not achieve the full £10.4 million add-ons agreed.

Darwin Nunez admitted he “misses” Liverpool

Ahead of Uruguay’s friendly against England in March, Nunez was asked whether he missed Liverpool.

“Yes, I’d be lying if I said no, that I don’t miss them,” he replied in an interview with AUFTV.

“The truth is they made me feel very good and my family too.

“In difficult moments that I went through personally, the people always gave me that affection, that support and that was very important to me.

“Obviously I miss Liverpool, I miss them a lot.”

In some ways, Liverpool also missed Nunez.

Despite his sporadic finishing, his energy and work rate could rarely be questioned, traits which Arne Slot has lacked with his current options throughout the season.
