JJ Gabriel gets Man United reality check as Man City ruin chance of copying Kobbie Mainoo

Manchester United starlet JJ Gabriel won't be able to replicate Kobbie Mainoo's FA Youth Cup feat

JJ Gabriel of Manchester United celebrates scoring their third goal during the U18 Premier League between Manchester United U18s and Nottingham Forest U18s at Carrington Training Ground on March 07, 2026 in Manchester, England.

Carrington gem JJ Gabriel may have extra motivation to do a number on Manchester City in the upcoming FA Youth Cup final. That's after Manchester United's greatest rivals stepped in to to prevent him replicating Kobbie Mainoo's major feat of four years ago.

Mainoo, 21, was a prominent member of the United team that beat Nottingham Forest to win the FA Youth Cup in 2022. However, that occasion was made so much more memorable due to the fact the final took place on home soil at Old Trafford.

A huge crowd of more than 67,000 turned out to watch United's youth of tomorrow win 3-1. And Mainoo played a major role in the last United team to make the FA Youth Cup final - before Gabriel & Co made their way into this year's decider.

A furore has erupted around the staging of the final and where it should take place. This comes after City took the Etihad Stadium off the table in favour of continuing work on the North Stand in the hopes of having 7,000 more seats available for the last fixture of the Premier League campaign.

The possibility of moving the final to Old Trafford was mooted. However, City rejected that notion for fear of losing home advantage for a finale between two local rivals.

Instead, the final on May 14 will take place at the Joie Stadium, home to Manchester City women. As a result, what could have been a final played out in front of tens of thousands will instead be capped to just 7,000.

It means 15-year-old Gabriel will be denied the same youth team swan song that Mainoo received back in 2022. That was the same year he was first drafted into United's senior setup and started on the road to becoming a household name at Old Trafford.

Mainoo was part of the same FA Youth Cup-winning side as the likes of Alejandro Garnacho, Dan Gore and Omari Forson. Each of those names went on to earn first-team honours for United, though only Mainoo remains at the club right now.

Just like that corps, Gabriel and others have been crucial to United reaching this point of the competition. It was Gabriel who opened the scoring in their semi-final win over Crystal Palace, where Chido Obi put the finishing touch on in extra time.

Wayne Rooney's son, Kai, has also played a role in the club's quest to the Joie Stadium. United icon Darren Fletcher has put together a group of prospects with a genuine chance to join some fellow greats in the history books.

It also means Gabriel's next appearance at Old Trafford could be his first-team debut. The teenager might have made his senior bow already were it not for stringent rules around minimum age limits but the club do plan to take him on their upcoming pre-season tour, hinting his breakthrough into the first-team could also be around the corner.

Just like Mainoo, he'll hope to step into the senior scene with the Youth Cup trailing in tow. However, he'll have to triumph in City territory, free of the fanfare of Old Trafford, if he's to do so.
