Ex-Liverpool player open to Premier League return with nightmare spell at club to end

Darwin Nunezis in talks to leave Al Hilal this summer, less than a year after joining the club, talkSPORT understands.

The striker has endured a difficult time of things in Saudi Arabia since his £46million move from Liverpool last summer, and has not played competitively since February 16.

Nunez was brutally axed from his side's Saudi Pro League squad in February to accommodate the January signing of Karim Benzema.

League rules dictate that teams are only allowed to register eight foreign players born before 2003 in their 25-man squads, prompting the club to ruthlessly cut the Uruguayan.

It is understood that Nunez asked to leave Al Hilal after Benzema's arrival, and talks over his departure remain ongoing.

While the 26-year-old and the club continue to discuss a mutual termination of his £400,000-a-week contract, there will be no formal announcement until after the season ends.

Where next for Nunez?

Should Nunez depart, it remains to be seen where he will go go next, with the front man open to a Premier League return.

Saudi dealmakers haven't ruled out keeping him in the Middle East, with Al Ittihad - who Benzema left to join Al Hilal - keen on a striker.

However, a deal for Nunez is said to be unlikely, leaving the door open for him to potentially move further afield.

talkSPORT understands the ex-Liverpool star is keen to look at European options, which includes interest from Turkey.

During the winter transfer window, he pushed for a move to Turkish Super Lig sideFenerbahce, only for a deal to fall through.

And while Nunez would be happy to explore a Premier League return, his potential suitors are not yet clear.

Both Chelsea and Newcastle have previously been credited with interest, with the two sides struggling for attacking firepower this term.

However, neither are believed to be pursuing Nunez, with the Magpies instead keeping tabs on Blues striker Liam Delap.

Nunez by numbers

Wherever Nunez goes next, he may take some time to get up to speed, having not played a minute of club football in almost three months.

Before his brutal axing by Al Hilal, he enjoyed a promising start to life, with six goals and four assists in 16 Saudi Pro League games.

Nunez's Middle Eastern switch came after he saw his game time increasingly limited in his final season at Liverpool.

While the Reds stormed to Premier League glory, the Uruguay international managed just seven goals in all competitions.

His time on Merseyside proved to be underwhelming, considering the huge £64m shelled out to sign him from Benfica in 2022.

Nunez scored 40 goals in 143 appearances for Liverpool, but faced criticism over his decision-making and wastefulness in front of goal.

Despite his Anfield departure, and the Reds spending heavily on attacking reinforcements Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike last summer, talkSPORT's Ally McCoist recently claimed they are yet to replace Nunez.

Now, after his ill-fated move to Saudi Arabia, the forward is desperate for game time, which has put his starting role for Uruguay at this summer's World Cup in jeopardy.

He featured off the bench in both of his country's March internationals - including their 1-1 draw with England.
