Sjogran reacts to City’s WSL title triumph

Our Director of Football pays tribute to Andrée Jeglertz, his staff, the City players and supporters following our confirmation as WSL champions.

The Blues sealed the title with a game to spare after Arsenal’s draw against Brighton & Hove Albion.

City have sat top of the WSL since early November, with our march to a first league crown since 2016 underpinned by a 13-match winning run between September and February.

Should we beat West Ham United on the final day of the campaign, then we can also match our highest-ever WSL points tally.

And Sjogran, who was appointed in October 2024, has highlighted the incredible team effort which has made our march to the WSL title possible.

Read what she had to say in full below…

“I’m so proud of what the team has achieved this season. Every player, coach and staff member has given everything to help City return to where we belong, and they should all be proud of the role they’ve played. I’m certainly proud of them all.

“Even though last year was tough for us, we all believed we were capable of challenging for the league this season, so to achieve that goal is particularly special.

“The players who were here from last season came back this summer with a real hunger to put things right and that energy was immediately picked up by the new signings, who have made a real impact on and off the pitch.

“Andrée has also done a fantastic job as Head Coach alongside Anders, Diego and Lauren, becoming only the second manager in WSL history to win the title in their first campaign.

“Football is about much more than statistics, but the fact that Bunny is top of the scoring charts, Ayaka is at the front of the Golden Glove race and Kerstin Casparij leads the way in WSL assists with three other City players hot on her heels also just shows how much of a team effort this has been.

“This is a special group of players and staff who all support each other in the bad times and challenge each other to maintain our standards in the good. There have been some bumps in the road, but the reaction has always been first class from everyone, which is why we’ve got to where we are today.

“A special thank you to Alex, who’s a tremendous captain for this team, and to Kerstin as well who’s always led the girls brilliantly when called upon. It’s also fantastic that Laura Coombs can call time on her incredible career with another WSL title – the perfect send off for a fantastic player and leader, but even better human being!

“Finally, a huge thank you to our incredible fans. You have also played a massive part in this league title and deserve to celebrate this achievement. Thank you for always being there to support us in the good and bad moments.

“The hard work isn’t over – we still have a huge FA Cup semi-final to come this weekend against Chelsea which I know Andrée, his team and the players have been working on tirelessly all week.

“Our focus now is on getting to Wembley at the end of the month, but this evening we’ll all enjoy the fact that – once again - Manchester City are Barclays Women’s Super League champions.”
