Newcastle United linked with Darwin Nunez before his move to Liverpool in 2022.
Former Newcastle United transfer target Darwin Nunez is available on a free transfer this summer.
Al-Hilal stumped up £46million - alongside a reported £400,000 per week wage packet - to sign the Uruguayan in August. However, just six months later, Nunez’s career in Saudi Arabia was plunged into doubt.
Karim Benzema arrived and took the striker’s squad place, with Saudi clubs only permitted to register eight foreign-born players. As a result, Nunez has not featured for Al-Hilal since February.
Darwin Nunez to leave Saudi Pro League
Uruguayan outlet Referi reports that Nunez now has an agreement to leave the club at the end of the season. The 26-year-old is seeking more game time and would be open to a Premier League return.
However, to do so, Nunez could not command the same figures he is receiving in the Middle East. For context, the striker earns double the wages in Saudi than he did at Liverpool.
Nunez had a mixed time on Merseyside during his three-year spell. His finest hour as a Red came at St James’ Park, with two late goals off the bench sinking Newcastle in August 2023.
Newcastle United interest?
NewcastleWorld does not believe the Magpies have any concrete interest in Nunez. Toon chiefs considered a move for the forward during his time at Benfica.
Liverpool ultimately won the race, with Newcastle moving for Alexander Isak. There is an irony in Nunez potentially replacing the Swede a year after he left for Anfield.
But it is understood that Newcastle are in the market for a striker. Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa - despite costing around £120million - have underwhelmed.
For the Magpies to consider Nunez, whose high-energy style may suit Eddie Howe, he would need to take a dramatic pay cut. Chelsea and Juventus are thought to be two potential suitors for Nunez’s signature.
