Paul Scholes has named Liverpool as his biggest disappointment of the season, while also taking aim at Florian Wirtz.
The Reds have endured a disappointing campaign following last season’s Premier League title win. Arne Slot’s side has lost 18 games across all competitions, and will finish the season without a trophy.
Although they remain on course to qualify for next season’s Champions League, the pressure is on Slot with three games remaining, and there have been suggestions that he could be replaced in the summer, although Liverpool is understood to be standing by the Dutchman, even with a potential exit route having been offered.

Having been by far the biggest spenders in last summer’s transfer window - breaking records to sign Wirtz and Alexander Isak, among others - Liverpool was widely tipped to defend its title this season, although after a positive start to the season, it hasn’t come close to challenging Arsenal and Manchester City at the top of the table.
That was enough for Scholes to name the Reds as his biggest disappointment this season as part of the Stick to Football podcast’s alternative end-of-season awards.

The suggestion did gain some support from Ian Wright, although Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Jill Scott suggested it should be one of Tottenham or Chelsea. The former is still in a battle against relegation, while the latter is now certain to miss out on a top-five finish, having lost its last six league games.
The pundits were also asked to name the player they felt had been the biggest disappointment, with Scholes immediately naming Wirtz. The 23-year-old has come under fire for his performances this season, having recorded seven goals and nine assists from 47 appearances across all competitions.
Again though, Scholes didn’t receive much support, with Neville suggesting Isak should receive the title, while the other pundits chose not to give an answer.

Liverpool.com says: Yes, it’s been a poor season from Liverpool, and no one is more disappointed than Reds fans. But overlooking Tottenham, who could still easily be relegated in these final few games, is bizarre from Scholes.
The fact that his other pundits immediately named Spurs or Chelsea tells you all you need to know about those two teams. The way in which the latter has fallen off this season is astonishing.

As for naming Wirtz as the biggest disappointment in terms of players - really? Again, it hasn’t been a great first season for him at Anfield, but what about Cole Palmer? Or Phil Foden? Or take your pick from practically any Spurs player?
