Bears urged to sign Deebo Samuel, not an edge rusher after draft

Many around the league believe the Chicago Bears need a pass rusher and failed to address it in the NFL Draft. Yet, columnist Ben Solak of ESPN believes the Bears should sign Deebo Samuel to fortify their wide receivers corps.

“The Bears use a lot of two-tight-end sets. However, they were still in 11 personnell 52% of the time last season, so they need to have a third starting receiver to go with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III. Right now, that's veteran Kalif Raymond, but Raymond is 31 and has had less than 300 yards in each of the past two seasons. The other alternative is third-round rookie Zavion Thomas. Deebo Samuel would be a really interesting free agent signing here,” Solak wrote.

The Bears used their draft capital to make several selections to bolster their team. But they did not draft an edge rusher. Instead, they drafted a defensive tackle named Jordan van den Berg, who posted moderate numbers at Georgia Tech. The Bears also drafted a tight end instead of an edge rusher in the draft. Despite winning the NFC North behind a good offense, led by Caleb Williams, the defense struggled to rush the passer.

But with the Bears starting the season against the Seattle Seahawks, they might need all the weapons they can get to overcome the best defense in the NFL. If that means signing Samuel, it could conceivably cover a potential weakness on the pass rush. While the Bears have an above-average secondary, the lack of a good pass rush could affect them down the line.
