DENVER — Only by the temperature for the Rockies’ Wednesday night game with the New York Mets would you have known that the city had just absorbed the most significant winter storm of the season in the 24 hours before first pitch.
By the time Colorado’s Michael Lorenzen toed the rubber and fired his opening four-seamer to New York left fielder Juan Soto, downtown Denver sat under clear skies. The night was chilly and the in-person attendance low, but if you looked around the Rockies’ home ballyard, you would find nary a hint of the storm that dropped anywhere from 5.8 to 10.8 inches over the immediate Denver metropolitan area.

That was thanks to the efforts of the Rockies’ grounds crew, which spent most of day preparing for the snow-delayed 7:20 p.m. MDT first pitch. The game had initially been scheduled for a 1:10 p.m. start time before being postponed due to the storm.

Monday’s game was moved up three hours to account for the potential for weather, although conditions ended up remaining playable through the evening. The Rockies lost that game, 4-2.
Tuesday’s game, scheduled for 6:40 p.m. that evening, was pushed to 1:10 p.m. MDT on Thursday, wiping out an off-day that would have eased the travel on both teams. Instead, the Rockies will have a quick turnaround before facing the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park on Friday night. The Mets don’t have as long a trip; they fly to Phoenix for a weekend series with the Arizona Diamondbacks.
