Transfer plans outlined by James Pearce:"Liverpool must decide"

**Liverpool are gearing up for a crucial summer after the brutal disappointment of the 2025-26 season.**

Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson are guaranteed to leave this summer, while Curtis Jones and even Allisson Becker are being linked with moves abroad.

James Pearce explains what Liverpool need in the transfer market this summer

Liverpool are expected to be busy in the market again this summer, with Pearce explaining where the club’s needs lie.

Replying to Liverpool supporters in a Q&A for the Athletic, Pearce urged owners FSG to sign **‘**_at least two attackers’_, saying that _‘they have to buy pace.’_

A bit like before Mane and Salah joined Liverpool, the Reds’ attack has slowed down a bit. Gakpo is a powerful runner but he’s by no means a lightning-quick forward, while Salah’s pace over 40 yards is not what it used to be.

Pearce writes: _“The midfield needs strengthening and how much needs to be done in that area depends on whether Curtis Jones moves on._

_“There are issues to address in both full-back positions. Liverpool must decide whether to buy a left-back to act as Milos Kerkez’s understudy following Andy Robertson’s exit or turn to Kostas Tsimikas after his loan at Roma. I think they also need a right-back to compete with \[Conor\] Bradley once he’s fit again.”_

Liverpool can return to the top with a few well-placed signings

---------------------------------------------------------------

A lot of the potential success Liverpool could enjoy depends on the future of manager Arne Slot.

That said, the Liverpool first team is lacking a few key profiles that, if added to the squad, could enable them to climb back into the Premier League title conversation for the 2026-27 season.

Primarily, Liverpool need elite wide attackers and a defensive midfielder.

I agree with Pearce in that Liverpool need a new right back, as Jeremie Frimpong is simply not a right back. For all his pace, he cannot read the game ahead of time, leaving him reacting rather than intervening.

Trent Alexander-Arnold was hardly an elite defender, relying on his elite creativity and passing to hold a place in the Liverpool starting XI, but Frimpong is neither a top defender or attacker.

If Liverpool can sign the right profiles this summer, they will stand a chance next season but a lot also depends on their success in replacing Mohamed Salah.
