Liverpool make contact over deal to sign 'elite' star to replace Robertson - report

Liverpool have made contact with Juventus about a deal to sign defender Andrea Cambiaso this summer, according to journalist Mirko Di Natale.

The Reds are expecting to have a very busy summer transfer window once again this year, as they close in on qualifying for Champions League football following a disappointing season. One area they need to strengthen will be the defence.

Ibrahima Konate is closing in on signing a new contract at Anfield, but veteran defender Andy Robertson will leave when his contract expires at the end of the campaign, which means a new left-back will be targeted ahead of the new season.

Andrea Cambiaso in action for Juventus

Cambiaso, who has been described as 'elite', has had a fine season for Juventus in Serie A this season, manging three goals and three assists in 33 appearances, helping the team battle for Champions League football once again.

His performances have attracted the interest of a number of clubs this summer, and Liverpool are understood to have made an initial enquiry to the Turin club about a deal for the 26-year-old.

The Reds aren't alone in their interest in the 26-year-old Italy international, with the likes of Man City, Tottenham, Barcelona and other Serie A clubs all showing a strong interest in his services.

It's unclear if the player would be open to the move or whether Juventus would be open to a sale at this stage, but with Robertson on the way out at Anfield, the club are already making moves to ensure he is replaced properly for next season.

Cambiaso and Kerkez Would Be Great Depth

Liverpool looked to address the left-back situation last summer by signing Milos Kerkez to compete with Robertson, but the Hungarian has struggled a bit to find his best form in his debut season.

The hope would still be that he is capable of stepping up as the first-choice option, but Liverpool want to ensure they're in a similar position to this year if he struggles again, by having top quality depth and competition in the squad in Cambiaso.

The Italian would seemingly suit the Premier League well with his style of play, and at 26 he is in the prime years of his career, so this could be a shrewd bit of business by Slot and Liverpool.
