Liverpool fans will no doubt have been watching Paris Saint-Germain book its place in another Champions League final rather enviously.

Of course, the Reds were beaten comfortably by the defending European champions in the quarter-finals, and even the most optimistic supporter probably wouldn’t have fancied Arne Slot’s side’s chances had it found a way through to face Bayern Munich.

Instead, it was Khvicha Kvaratskhelia that would have left countless fans thinking ‘what if?’ as he produced a sensational performance. Ousmane Dembele may have provided the decisive goal to decide the tie, but it was his fellow forward that was rightfully earning all of the plaudits.

And it wasn’t just his offensive output that had fans and pundits everywhere purring. Kvaratskhelia produced a superb all-round performance, playing a huge role in his side defending their lead inside a vociferous Allianz Arena.

“Like last time, I think it was Ousmane that said if you don’t run, you are going on the bench,” Kvaratskhelia told Stan Sport after the game on Wednesday.

“With [Luis] Enrique, you have to run back very much, and you just have to help your defenders and the team spirit here is amazing, so we are running for each other and we are fighting for each other. Even if you don’t have energy, you just have to find that and run back.”

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard was among those enamoured with Kvaratskhelia’s work rate. Speaking to TNT Sports, he said: "He’s just so powerful, so dangerous and capable of going both ways.

"What an assist. He gets down the left, and most wingers are wasteful in that moment, but it was a huge early moment in the game, and he delivered a perfect ball for Dembele.

"But it’s also the other side of his game. A lot of wingers only want to do the glamorous side when they have the ball at their feet, but this guy does it all.

"He works, tackles, fights, assists, and scores. He’s the best winger in the world right now.”

It’s that sort of commitment to the cause that Liverpool fans might have been able to see themselves had the Reds followed through on their interest in Kvaratskhelia last year before he made the move to PSG.

Seeing him not only help fire the French side to back-to-back European finals, but also display an attitude that became synonymous with Liverpool in recent years, will no doubt smart for supporters of the Reds - especially when they’re not seeing too much of that this season.

There has, unfortunately, been a severe downturn in performances following last season’s title triumph, and far too often, fans have not seen the effort that Kvaratskhelia displayed.

It’s a problem that needs to be rectified before next season. Sadly, there seems little chance that Kvaratskhelia could be the answer - not when he stands on the verge of a second Champions League winners’ medal in just a year.
