Sitting eighth ahead of match week 33, they could still miss out on European football altogether. They are just a point behind Freiburg in seventh, the spot that secures qualification for next season’s Europa Conference League.Albert Riera is under increasing pressure as manager of the Eagles, with his future uncertain even if he manages to guide Frankfurt into Europe by the end of the campaign. As a result, Friday night’s clash is effectively a must-win for the visitors.According to Sky Sports in Germany, Eintracht Frankfurt are planning to part ways with Riera in the summer after a mixed six months on the pitch. However, a quicker decision could be made if they suffer a heavy defeat against Borussia Dortmund, with several coaching candidates already on their shortlist.Albert Riera still has a contract with Eintracht Frankfurt until 2028. The club’s hierarchy is closely reviewing the team’s sporting progress and assessing possible alternatives for the position. The current internal plan is to part ways with Riera at the end of the season in a cost-effective manner. His performances since taking charge in February have reportedly fallen short of expectations. However, Frankfurt are keen to avoid any abrupt or immediate decision unless results deteriorate sharply. Another sporting setback on Friday evening could, however, trigger an immediate separation. While such a swift decision remains on the table, it is viewed internally as a last resort. At the same time, Frankfurt are already exploring the coaching market. Four candidates are on their shortlist. One of them is Matthias Jaissle. The former Bundesliga player and current Al-Ahli head coach is seen as tactically flexible, quick to develop teams, and experienced internationally – qualities highly valued given Frankfurt’s European ambitions.Riera joined Frankfurt from NK Celje in Slovenia in February, less than 12 months after winning the Slovenian Cup in his second spell with the club.Providing an update on his future, Riera said at the press conference ahead of the Dortmund clash: “I’m not thinking about my future, that’s not important.“All that matters is the team and getting points in these two games. But I know exactly how things work in this profession. I tell myself, ‘Albert, if you don’t win enough, then someone else will.’ That’s how it is. We have to accept – starting with me – that if you don’t win, you also have to accept criticism.”Riera featured for clubs including Espanyol, Liverpool, Manchester City and Galatasaray before retiring in 2016, with the Frankfurt job marking his first managerial role in Germany.
