Man City clinch the WSL title after Arsenal drop points

Manchester City were crowned Women’s Super League champions after Arsenal failed to beat Brighton, with the game ending with a 1-1 draw.

Despite the fact Arsenal still have two games in hand against Aston Villa and Everton, they needed to win the game and take home the three points against Brighton to stay in contention after Manchester City edged closer to the title with a 1-0 victory against Liverpool, courtesy of a goal from Rebecca Knaak at the weekend.

They first won the title ten years ago back in 2016. Despite getting close to clinching the title multiple times, most notably in 2023 where they stayed in the fight and forced Chelsea to the final game of the season, Manchester City finally take title for the second time since in their history.

Additionally, the champions end what has been a six year domestic dominance by Chelsea.

Despite starting the season with a 2-1 loss to Chelsea the Manchester City side have had a relatively consistent season with just two further league losses, a 1-0 loss to Arsenal back in February and a 3-2 loss to Brighton a couple weeks ago which kept Arsenal in touching distance before their game against the same side.

Most notably, they showed dominance against Chelsea in February with a 5-1 victory over the London side, and a little closer to home they showed the same intensity in the Manchester derbies, winning three goals to none both home and away.

Along with their winning Women's Super League campaign, they made it to the semi-finals of the Women’s League Cup, where they lost out of on a place in the final as Chelsea beat them 1-0

Manchester City are still in contention for another trophy and the opportunity to do the double, with them to play familiar foes,Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final this weekend.
