Confirmed: Aston Villa vs. Liverpool moved to a Friday night

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool has been rearranged due to the hosts’ participation in the Europa League final this month.

Having lost the first leg 1-0 away against Nottingham Forest, Villa came from behind with an emphatic 4-0 home win to book their place in Istanbul for the Europa League final on Wednesday, May 20.

As a result, Liverpool’s penultimate match of the season against Unai Emery’s side has been moved.

Aston Villa vs. Liverpool will now kick off at 8pm (BST) on Friday, May 15, with the Premier League match broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK.

It was previously scheduled for Sunday, May 17.

Remaining LFC Fixtures

Date Opponent KO (BST)

Sat, May 9 Chelsea (H) 12:30

Fri, May 15 Aston‌ Villa (A) 20:00

Sun, May 24 Brentford (H) 16:00

The rescheduling of the Reds’ trip to Villa Park means they will have eight full days without a game before the last outing of the season against Brentford at Anfield.

With Villa competing in their first major European final since 1982, there is a chance they will have one eye on that game five days later.

Man United comfortably occupy third place, sitting six points above Liverpool, so Emery and Arne Slot‘s teams should be in a straight shootout for fourth.

While Champions League qualification as a result of a top-five finish is all but secure for both clubs, there is still a small financial gain to be made from finishing further up the table.

Last season, fourth-placed Chelsea earned £2.6 million more in merit payments than fifth-placed Newcastle.

There is also a chance that sixth place will qualify for the Champions League this season. For this to happen, Villa would need to win the Europa League and finish fifth in the Premier League.

Earlier in the season, Liverpool went on a run of nine defeats in 12 matches, but during that period they managed to beat Villa and Real Madrid.

Separated by just three days, the Reds beat both teams at Anfield, the first a comfortable 2-0 win over an in-form Villa side.

Harvey Elliott will be ineligible for the upcoming meeting but has only made the bench in one of the last 11 league games and hasn’t played for Villa since March 19.
