Charge dismissed against Chiefs coach Dave Merritt

JOHNSON COUNTY, Kan. (KCTV) - A misdemeanor domestic battery charge against Kansas City Chiefs assistant coach Dave Merritt has been dismissed.

Court documents filed in Johnson County, Kansas, court revealed the case was dismissed without prejudice.

Merritt was arrested on April 23, 2026, and appeared in Johnson County District Court later that day. He entered a plea of not guilty for the one count of misdemeanor domestic battery he was facing.

“We have been in touch with Dave. We understand the situation. We’ve looked into it,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said after the team made its two first-round draft picks that night.

Merritt has been with the Chiefs for seven seasons as the defensive backs coach.

He was back on the practice field during Chiefs rookie minicamp last week, instructing a group of young defensive backs that included sixth overall pick Mansoor Delane, who the Chiefs picked out of LSU on the same day Merritt was arrested.
