Mohamed Salah has obvious transfer decision to make - and it isn't Real Madrid or Saudi Arabia

Mohamed Salah will leave Liverpool this summer and he won't be short of options — there is one destination that should tick most of his boxes, and it isn't Saudi Arabia

Mohamed Salah is leaving Liverpool, and he could make a maximum of three more appearances for the Reds. But where will he play next?

Many have assumed that Salah will end up in Saudi Arabia, and there is no question that he would be welcome there. The question must be asked, though: at 33, is Salah ready to make such a step down?

The Egyptian said last week, in a conversation with Steven Gerrard, that he still has years left in his playing career. Salah's work to keep himself in top shape, similar to Cristiano Ronaldo, means he could play for many more seasons yet — and Saudi will still be on the table further down the line.

Many of the same arguments apply to MLS: Salah could go there in a few years, and the offers will still be there. For now, he can play at a much higher level.

The highest standard essentially means staying in Europe. Salah could move to, say, Flamengo or Fluminense in Brazil, but that would be a left-field move.

The Egyptian outlet Mwatan claimed this week that Real Madrid is leading the race for Salah, but that feels unlikely for a variety of obvious reasons — not least that it tends to sign players for free, but usually only much younger ones.

The likes of Casemiro have been moved on from the Bernabeu before they reached Salah's age.

La Liga champions-elect Barcelona is a destination that has more of a track record of taking older players on free transfers, like Robert Lewandowski, but the Catalan side hasn't really been linked. It already has Lamine Yamal and Raphinha to play down the right.

Elsewhere in Spain, Atletico Madrid was put forward at one point, but may not be able to afford the wages. PSG, meanwhile, does not need any more quality in wide areas, as it proved once more in reaching the Champions League final this week.

Bayern Munich — even though it is chasing Anthony Gordon — is in a similar position. Salah could certainly do a job there, but Michael Olise has his best position locked down.

Considering all of the factors, a move to Italy feels like the best option. And though there are multiple clubs that might make a move, there is one that stands above the rest: Juventus.

Linked with the likes of Bernardo Silva and Alisson Becker too, the Old Lady is on the rise again. It looks set to qualify for the Champions League again and now wants to take the next step.

Managed by Luciano Spalletti, who Salah worked with at AS Roma, Juventus ticks a lot of boxes. Kevin De Bruyne moved to Serie A in part because of the lower intensity, and if Scott McTominay can reach new levels after leaving England, so can Salah.

A move to Italy would keep Salah at a high level, while also putting him in a league that isn't as intense as the Premier League. Inter Milan could be an option, but Juventus is being most strongly linked.
