North Carolina Faces Pitt in Penultimate Regular Season Series

Boshamer Stadium will host its last regular-season series of 2026 when Pittsburgh visits No. 2 North Carolina beginning Friday.

The Tar Heels (37-9-1, 17-7 ACC) return to league play after an open weekend, apart from the non-conference matchup versus Duke. The Panthers (28-18, 10-14) look to bounce back from a sweep at Florida State.

This series will be the penultimate weekend series of the season for both squads. North Carolina sits at number two in the ACC standings, just two games behind Georgia Tech, while Pitt resides at 10th.

UNC comes in off an up-and-down week of play, including two wins over Duke by a combined 30 runs, and a 12-2 loss at home to now No. 8 Coastal Carolina. The Heels have this series against Pitt and next weekend's rivalry series versus NC State to try to reclaim the top spot in the conference.

Ace starting pitcher Jason DeCaro has caught fire over his last three starts. He earned the winning decision in all three, allowing just a single earned run while amassing 15 strikeouts.

As the likely Friday starter, DeCaro will look to set the tone against the Panthers. Out of the bullpen, Caden Glauber and Walker McDuffie continue producing efficient outings to back up starting pitching.

Offensively, Owen Hull still leads the charge in the majority of statistical categories, but both Gavin Gallaher and Cooper Nicholson have added gaudy contributions as of late.

During the 22-run smackdown over the Blue Devils in game three of that series, Gallaher tacked on six RBI off of three hits. He has added another three hits in the two games since.

Nicholson leads the team with 11 home runs, and his latest produced the lone two runs against Coastal. His power also earns him the top OPS mark on the squad at 1.060, a couple of ticks higher than Hull.

In terms of fielding, UNC still leads the ACC with a .980 fielding percentage, but the defense has shown some costly lapses recently. For example, the excellent center fielder Hull allowed a ball to deflect off his glove late against Coastal, sparking a big inning.

It will be worth seeing if the defense can play a clean series at home this weekend.

Pitt's offense will certainly be challenging, as they place second in the conference behind an electric Georgia Tech unit in batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. The Panthers are arguably the most patient hitters in the country, topping the NCAA in walks.

Right fielder Lorenzo Carrier anchors the offense. He has drilled a team-high 18 home runs, while also earning the nation's fifth-best on-base percentage. His efforts have cemented his name in talks for multiple awards, including the Golden Spikes Award.

Shortstop Caden Dulin chases the Brooks Wallace Award, given to the nation's top shortstop, with his .425 average in conference play.

LHP Antonio Doganiero is the lead man from the bump. He has collected five winning decisions with 42 strikeouts, holding opposing hitters to a .243 average.

Pitt will look to recreate the theatrics from a four-game stretch in late April, where the Panthers dominated then-No. 12 West Virginia on the road before sweeping then-No. 10 Virginia at home. They hold a 5-5 record against ranked opponents this year.

The likely starters for the Tar Heels on the weekend are RHP DeCaro (8-2), RHP Ryan Lynch (3-4), and LHP Folger Boaz (3-1). The Sunday starter may still be in question, as Boaz did not start the Sunday of their last ACC series in favor of Glauber.

For the Panthers, the weekend trio will likely be RHP Doganiero (5-3), LHP Chase Kriebel (2-2), and RHP Drew Lafferty (4-3). Pitt's athletic communications piece listed the Saturday starter as TBA, but Kriebel has been given the nod for a limited outing in the last two Saturday games.

Carolina's pitching will endure its second toughest battle of ACC play with this patient Pitt offense. The key will be limiting walks and not letting Carrier do the heavy lifting.

Game one of the series is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start on Friday.
