The latest transfer news from the Premier League as Man United, Liverpool, Newcastle and more eye up some summer business
Friday is upon us, and that means we’re just a day away from Gameweek 36 of the Premier League getting underway. Liverpool host Chelsea in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off to start things off, ahead of other afternoon treats including Manchester United’s trip to Sunderland and Manchester City hosting Brentford.
The relegation battle takes centre stage on Sunday, as West Ham and Nottingham Forest host Arsenal and Newcastle respectively, while a bonus Monday night offering comes in the form of Tottenham vs Leeds United. With just three weeks left to go, and so much still to be decided, the tension is continuing to mount at a ferocious pace.
For now, here are the latest transfer rumours concerning the Premier League, including the latest on Man United, Liverpool, Newcastle and more:
Chelsea ‘under pressure’ to sell Enzo Fernandez
Let’s begin in west London where, we are told, Chelsea are ‘under pressure’ to sell Enzo Fernandez this summer. Still smarting from the slap on the wrist the club dished out in the form of a two-match ban for some press comments during the last international break, the Argentina international’s heavily rumoured potential to exit Real Madrid still looks to be on the cards ahead of the summer.
Caught Offside suggest that Los Blancos will go all guns blazing in the summer transfer window, and the 25-year-old looks to be at the top of their midfielder shortlist. It’s claimed that for Chelsea “the sale is necessary” but it’s not specified whether this to because they need to balance the books, or simply because the player has had his head turned and has, in effect, already checked out.
The 3AM Verdict: To quote Queen’s ‘Under Pressure’, just how long can Chelsea watch good friend Fernandez “scream ‘let me out’”?He made our list of players the Blues need to sell this summer- they would do well to avoid the transfer saga circus and just move on. With £100m+ pumped into the coffers, the Blues could easily bag a quality replacement. Although, being Chelsea, they’ll probably blow it all on a 17-year-old Peruvian wonderkid winger.
Liverpool could snatch Man United’s top midfield target
To Anfield next, where Liverpool could be set to jam an almighty stick in the spokes Man United’s summer transfer window bicycle. Michael Carrick was looking forward to merrily riding down to the shops - with little Lisandro Martinez sat in the basket, no doubt - to pick up Adam Wharton, but the Reds may be planning to send him flying over the handlebars and into a ditch.
Team Talk suggest that the Crystal Palace and England midfielder is on the Reds’ ‘shortlist’ alongside Brighton’s Carlos Baleba - a player who also was linked with United earlier this week. However, it’s noted that the Reds’ most pressing concern is replacing Mohamed Salah, which won’t be done on the cheap. Other names said to be on Liverpool’s radar are Lens’ Mamadou Sangare and Monaco’s Lamine Camara, both of whom have been tearing it up in Ligue 1 this season.
The 3AM Verdict: United shouldn’t have too much to worry about, really. They’ll get at least one top class new midfielder in this summer, and the Reds’ preoccupation with replacing Salah and also potentially Alisson could give them a clear run at their desired target. With both player said to be valued at around the £80m mark, let’s hope Carrick’s remembered his wallet.
Newcastle United could let Gordon go in ‘cut-price’ deal
The report says that Newcastle had originally been holding out for £75m to agree a sale but, with that likely to be too rich for Bayern’s blood, Gordon could be let go on a cut-price deal. This would avoid the unattractive situation of being left with a player on the books who appears to have his heart set on a swift exit once the window opens. It’s also noted that interest from Liverpool could change things, with the Reds more likely to stump up the cash to land a hometown star.
The 3AM Verdict: Bar the blistering Champions League run of scoring form, Gordon just hasn’t looked at the races this season. Whether it’s burnout or his attention being drawn elsewhere is hard to say, but a fresh start is probably the best thing for all parties invovled. What Newcastle won’t want is for the situation to drag on over the course of the World Cup which, if history has taught us anything, it probably will.
