Anthony Gordon's future is already threatening to be the big talking point of Newcastle United's summer transfer window as two of Europe's biggest clubs look set to do battle over his future.

Having been heavily linked with a move to German champions Bayern Munich, Gordon's representatives were pictured meeting Barcelona sporting director Deco in the Spanish media earlier this week.

The Spanish champions are keen to sign the England international this summer, having been impressed with what they saw in the Champions League meetings between the sides earlier this season.

The Blaugrana are in the market to sign a new left-winger but Newcastle's asking price of around £75m-£80m will make any deal complicated for Hansi Flick's side.

There have been suggestions from Manchester that the pictures were designed to put pressure on Manchester United to lower the agreed price of around £26million to turn Marcus Rashford's loan deal permanent.

So how legitimate is Barcelona's interest in Gordon, will they turn Rashford's loan deal permanent and could they find creative solutions to make the deal enticing for Newcastle? Chronicle Live put those questions to Diario Sport's Barcelona reporter German Bona to find out the view from Catalonia.

How serious is Barcelona's interest in Anthony Gordon and what did you hear about what was discussed in his agents' meeting with Deco?

"FC Barcelona wants to strengthen its attack, primarily with a prolific centre forward. The interest in Gordon is genuine, mainly because he's a player that manager Hansi Flick greatly admires.

"Flick also wants to reinforce the left wing, but initially, the biggest financial investment is earmarked for a No 9. The meeting between Deco and his agents was an initial contact to discuss the financial offer."

Are Barcelona looking to turn Marcus Rashford's loan deal permanent and could the Gordon pictures be a way of lowering that transfer fee with Manchester United?

"Barcelona's willingness to exercise their option to buy Marcus Rashford is not guaranteed. He's a player who has shown great promise, but also periods of inconsistency. His stats are good, and the €30million price tag is reasonable. He's a serious contender, and a more economical option than Gordon."

Were Barcelona impressed with what they saw from Gordon in the Champions League matches between the two sides this season?

"Anthony Gordon's most impressive performance against Barcelona was in the group stage at St James' Park, but interest in Gordon stems more from his overall performance in the Champions League and from being one of the top scorers."

Are Barcelona looking at any other left-wingers as alternatives to Gordon?

"Yes, Barcelona has other options on the left wing. Gordon would be the most exciting, but also the most expensive. The low-cost alternative is Abde, a Real Betis player who played for Barça and for whom they retain certain rights. And there is also, as we've mentioned, the possibility of acquiring Rashford outright."

Could Barcelona financially be able to meet Newcastle's asking price?

"It's a very high price that FC Barcelona would try to negotiate (or include players in the deal) if they ultimately opted for Gordon. This isn't so much due to financial difficulties, but rather because, as I mentioned before, they want to make a significant investment in a top-level centre forward.

"Their preferred option in this regard is Julián Álvarez, who also commands a very high price. Anthony Gordon's ability to play in any attacking position could be an important factor. If I remember correctly, Gordon played as a centre forward in the matches against FC Barcelona this season."
