French media drop Mike Penders verdict as Chelsea consider making him number one

Mike Penders is doing all he can to stake his claim for a place at Chelsea next season, despite Strasbourg bowing out of the Conference League against Rayo Vallecano.

Mike Penders has spent the 2025/26 season flourishing once again at RC Strasbourg, cementing his reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young goalkeepers. He’s featured in nearly every league match and has played over 3,000 minutes of senior football.

Statistically, Penders has been a standout performer, keeping nine clean sheets in Ligue 1, but it’s his distribution and composure under pressure that have particularly impressed.

Given the goalkeeper situation at Chelsea right now, Penders is expected to return to Stamford Bridge this summer to compete directly for the number-one spot.

QUARTER-FINAL TWO: Enzo Fernandez vs Cole Palmer?

French outlet Maxifoot have given their verdict on Mike Penders’ display in the Conference League last night, rating him an 8/10, the best of any player.

The Belgian goalkeeper avoided a much heavier humiliation for Racing. Author of multiple decisive saves against Alemao, Palazon, De Frutos and Camello, the Strasbourg goalkeeper kept his team alive almost single-handedly throughout the match. Despite the goal conceded from close range, which was difficult to avoid, the last Alsatian rampart was the only player to really respond in this semi-final.

Chelsea-bound Valentin Barco also featured for Strasbourg and received rating of 4.5.

Mike Penders is a risk at Chelsea

Despite Mike Penders’ impressive development at Strasbourg, integrating a 20-year-old as Chelsea’s primary goalkeeper remains a significant gamble.

The Premier League’s physicality and relentless pace provide a much harsher environment than Ligue 1.

His current save percentage and low success rate in aerial duels suggest he is still far from the finished article, especially given the corner tactics of Arsenal and other teams.

Rather than repeating the mistakes of the past with unproven youngsters, the board may find better value in a finished product to provide immediate, world-class stability.
