Aston Villa vs Liverpool has become one of the most moved fixtures on the calendar – and the Premier League now has two separate reasons for shifting it. The clash at Villa Park has been rescheduled twice, with cup commitments and European success forcing the latest change.
The game was originally scheduled for Sunday May 17 at 3pm BST as part of the Premier League’s final‑run‑in programme. It was then moved for broadcast purposes, with the league confirming a new 12.30pm kick‑off on the same date.
However, due to Villa’s progress in the Europa League, the game has now been rescheduled again. Unai Emery’s Villa has enjoyed a deep run in Europe and has now booked their place in the Europa League final – managing to beat Nottingham Forest 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-final.
The final in Istanbul falls just three days after the game was due to be played, prompting the Premier League to act again to avoid squeezing Villa’s preparations and to protect the integrity of the competition.
Liverpool have now confirmed that the match will be brought forward and played on Friday May 15 at Villa Park, with an 8pm BST kick‑off live on Sky Sports in the UK. The new date gives Villa extra recovery time before their European showpiece.
The latest reshuffle shows how tight the calendar has become for clubs competing on multiple fronts.
With domestic, European and broadcast demands all jostling for space, fixtures like Aston Villa vs Liverpool are increasingly vulnerable to late changes. Supporters, meanwhile, are left trying to keep up, with travel, accommodation and time off work all impacted every time the schedule moves.
In another season, Villa vs Liverpool might have been a straight shoot‑out for a top‑four place, with Arne Slot’s side currently fourth and Unai Emery’s men fifth.
This year, though, the Premier League is on course to secure a fifth Champions League qualification spot, meaning both clubs still have a strong chance of dining at Europe’s top table, regardless of how this fixture plays out.
