Liverpool are reportedly one of seven clubs that are in the mix to sign Juventus full-back Andrea Cambiaso in the summer transfer window.
The Reds may look to sign a new right-back at the end of the season, considering Conor Bradley is still out with a serious knee injury, and Jeremie Frimpong has struggled to impress since his move from Bayer Leverkusen.
There could be a new left-back brought in, due to Andy Robertson’s imminent exit, although Kostas Tsimikas could return from a loan spell at Roma and play second fiddle to Milos Kerkez.
According to a new report from Tutto Juve, Liverpool are eyeing a move for Juve ace Cambiaso, who is capable of shining in either full-back position.
The 26-year-old could cost as much as £43.2m – potentially £30.2m if Juve fail to qualify for the Champions League – but there is a seven-way battle for him, with Barcelona, AC Milan, Inter Milan, Napoli, Manchester City and Tottenham all in the mix, too.
Andrea Cambiaso a shrewd, versatile option for Liverpool
Cambiaso could be an effective signing by Liverpool, not least because of his aforementioned versatility, immediately giving Arne Slot more options at full-back.
The Italian is an impressive player at both ends of the pitch, with Milan legend Mauro Tassotti making it clear how highly he rates him, even comparing him to the iconic Paolo Maldini:
“I was immediately struck by Andrea’s ability to play both left and right. And above all his ability to kick with both feet. I haven’t yet understood whether he is right or left-footed. In this sense, he is similar to Paolo Maldini who however was much more powerful from a physical standpoint, had incredible charisma and was also very strong defensively, so much so that he ended his career as a centre-back.”
Cambiaso is a 19-cap Italy international, scoring three times for his country, and he is at the right age to be an instant hit for Liverpool, bagging three goals and assists apiece in Serie A this season.
He is a left-back by trade, though, so it may be hard for the Reds to keep both him and Kerkez happy, which is perhaps the one negative against them bringing him in.
