Speculation surrounding Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay's uncharacteristically uptight demeanor while addressing the media after Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft continues. Was his visible frustration rooted in the club's selection of former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, or was this a facade to appease star Matthew Stafford?
McVay, AKA "Mr. Grumpy," has acknowledged he wasn't in the best mood at the podium that night. Many have assumed his tense expression was about one of Simpson or Stafford — or perhaps both. However, intel from NBC Sports' Chris Simms during a recent episode of the PFT Live Podcast suggests neither player was the crux of the problem.
Simms caught up with McVay at Arsenal's Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Champions League semifinal win over Atlético Madrid. The two discussed several topics, including the infamous presser, which was apparently over a minor spat that didn't involve reassuring Stafford or opposing Simpson.
"What [McVay] did tell me was the reason he, in the press conference, was pissed off, had neither to do with him acting or the pick, but had to do with some sort of volatile situation that happened before they went out there,"Simms stated. "There was some little argument about something."
Chris Simms reveals Sean McVay's viral press conference reaction wasn't about Ty Simpson or Matthew Stafford
Well, that should all but end the great debate of McVay's body language, though that's probably not what Rams fans were hoping to hear. Clearly, he was upset regarding the mysterious matter, and that's a development worth monitoring in itself.
For what it's worth, nothing "major" was on McVay's mind, per Simms. That's relieving to hear, albeit slightly unsettling. Whatever went down was evidently enough for the Rams' leader to wear it on his face with cameras pointed at him.
Are McVay and Rams general manager Les Snead not in "lockstep in every decision" they make, like he's gone on the record to say? Did taking Simpson in the first round suddenly complicate ongoing contract negotiations with Stafford? Simms answered one question, yet inadvertently created several new ones.
Frankly, we'll probably never know exactly what was going on behind the scenes. Nevertheless, the fact that McVay's emotion was genuine but not aimed at Simpson or Stafford adds another layer of intrigue to the saga.
