The Dallas Cowboys were able to make multiple additions to the roster via the NFL Draft. The biggest one was safety Caleb Downs, who was the 11th overall pick. Downs is a versatile chess piece that will play several spots for this defense and should be able to have an immediate role
But his presence has an opponent circling this matchup before the season even kicks off – and it's his older brother Josh Downs.
Josh Downs, who is a receiver with the Indianapolis Colts, spoke about his upcoming matchup with the Cowboys in 2026 and how he can't wait to line up against his brother, who will be in the slot for Dallas.
"He told me if he goes to the Cowboys, he’s playing nickel. So, that’s like head-to-head all game," Josh Downs said via The Athletic's James Boyd. "...I gotta let him know he’s the little brother in the situation.”
With this matchup being months away, Dallas is still on Josh Downs's mind and it's due to his younger brother being on the roster. Whenever they suit up, it will be Josh vs. Caleb throughout the bulk of the contest.
Cowboys are on Josh Downs' mind due to the upcoming matchup against Caleb
Josh Downs is primarily a slot receiver, as he played 75% of his offensive snaps on the inside last season. And the Cowboys will likely play Caleb Downs at nickelback in this scheme. Christian Parker is coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles, where Cooper DeJean was a massive difference maker in the slot over the last two seasons.
The Cowboys have high expectations for Caleb Downs, as he was one of the most effective players in college football. He lined up in the slot, at free safety and in the box, showcasing he can handle whatever is thrown his way. But with him telling his older brother that he play the slot for the Cowboys, it already gives fans insight where they'll see him on game days.
Josh Downs has been in the NFL for three years and has been a productive player for the Colts. He has logged 198 catches, 2,140 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns in 47 games with Indianapolis. Despite the success, Caleb Downs will be ready to lock down his brother.
The two have had battles all their lives but being on an NFL field competing against each other will definitely be a dream come true. Regardless, they both plan on dominating the other, adding an extra layer of excitement for the contest. Although he are months away from this contest taking place, it already has the attention of the Colts receiver.
