Former NFL Star Faces $2.5M Fraud Lawsuit Over Unpaid Business Loans

Shawne Merriman built a reputation as one of the NFL‘s most feared pass rushers during his eight-year career. Before injuries ended his playing days in 2013, the former Los Angeles Chargers linebacker recorded 45.5 sacks and earned three Pro Bowl selections.

Now his post-football ventures have landed him in federal court.A company claims Merriman orchestrated a multi-step scheme to avoid repaying more than $2.5 million.

A decade has passed since Merriman last played professional football. Selected 12th overall in the 2005 draft, the Maryland product joined the San Diego Chargers. He showed strong skills as an outside linebacker early in his career.

In 2004, during the trade between Eli Manning and Philip Rivers, the Chargers got a draft pick. This pick was later used to select Merriman. A rookie contract worth $11.5 million with $9 million in guarantees followed. His current financial dispute stands in sharp contrast to those early earnings.

NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honors came to Merriman in 2005. In 2006, he led the league with 17.5 sacks across twelve games. Recurring injuries limited his career to 75 games across eight NFL seasons.

In 2011, Merriman signed a two-year, $10.5 million extension with the Buffalo Bills. During his brief time in Buffalo, injuries continued to plague the veteran linebacker. Before the 2012 season, the Bills released him and re-signed him midyear.

Merriman retired in 2013 after brief stints with the Chargers and Bills. From football to business, his transition has hit a serious legal roadblock. ARI Agent LLC reportedly filed the fraud lawsuit in federal court earlier this month.

Merriman borrowed millions for his company, Lights Out XF, the firm claims. The same nickname from Merriman’s NFL playing career lives on through this company. Running the business into the ground with no reliable revenue is what ARI alleges.

The lender did not mince words in its court filing. Deliberate and coordinated fraud was how ARI described the case in its misrepresentation claims. These acts were not isolated incidents but part of a larger pattern, the firm insists.

Merriman used obstruction to avoid repayment and accountability, ARI claims. He also sent threatening messages to deter recovery efforts, the company alleges. One voicemail warned that legal action would open a can of worms.

ARI seeks the unpaid loan balance plus additional damages in the federal case. The available court documents do not specify the exact amount of additional damages. Beyond his statement, Merriman has not addressed the specific fraud allegations.

Through a separate legal filing, Merriman disputes the fraud allegations himself. “We filed a lawsuit against A.R.I. in Nevada some months ago and the matter is ongoing,” Merriman told TMZ Sports.

“I’m still hopeful there’s a resolution, but for now I’ll let the legal process take its course.” The former linebacker believes the courts will reach a fair outcome.

The federal case will determine whether the fraud claims hold merit. The legal battle adds a complicated chapter to Merriman’s post-football story. No trial date has yet been set for the federal dispute.
