May 8 – Real Madrid’s season and the club’s galacticos are unravelling with mounting pressure surrounding Kylian Mbappé compounded by reports of dressing-room unrest ahead of Sunday’s decisive Clásico against FC Barcelona.
Mbappé arrived in Madrid expected to define a new era at the Bernabéu. Statistically, his output has remained strong – 85 goals in 100 appearances – but the wider picture has fallen short of expectations. Real are on course to finish a second straight season without either La Liga or the Champions League, an outcome that rarely passes quietly at a club of their stature.
Whilst thats far from ideal, recent attention has centred on events away from the pitch. Mbappé is currently recovering from a hamstring injury suffered against Real Betis in late April, leaving his availability for Sunday in doubt.
During his recovery period, the France forward travelled to Sardinia on a club-approved break, but images of him on a yacht surfaced while Madrid were in action against Espanyol, triggering a backlash among sections of the support.
“In his free time, Mbappe can do whatever he wants, like any other player,” head coach Álvaro Arbeloa said.
The reaction online was brutal. A petition calling for Mbappé to leave the club spread rapidly across social media, attracting over 30 million signatures, though it remains impossible to verify how many were genuine Madrid supporters. Even so, the scale of the reaction reflects the growing frustration around a season that has drifted badly off course.
Mbappé’s representatives have since pushed back on criticism, insisting it “does not reflect the reality of Kylian’s commitment and daily work for the team”.
The situation has become even more complicated following reports of a physical altercation involving teammates Federico Valverde and Aurélien Tchouaméni at the club’s training ground. According to reports in Spain, tensions between the pair escalated following an earlier dispute, culminating in a training-ground incident that left Valverde requiring hospital assessment for a head injury.
Real Madrid later confirmed disciplinary proceedings had been opened against both players. The club also stated that Valverde had suffered a “cranioencephalic traumatism” and would be sidelined for between 10 and 14 days, ruling him out of Sunday’s meeting with Barcelona.
